Jari Vontae Obituary, Death; 6-Year-Old Killed in Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash in Cumberland Community

A wave of grief has struck the Cumberland community following the tragic death of 6-year-old Jari Vontae Spencer, who was killed in an early morning hit-and-run crash on East Washington Street.

Authorities said emergency responders were called to the area around 2:35 a.m. after a passerby reported a child in the roadway. When officers arrived, they provided immediate aid before paramedics transported Jari to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators with the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the child and believe he had left his home without his parents’ awareness before entering the roadway, where he was struck by a vehicle that initially fled the scene.

The incident has left family, friends, and neighbors devastated. Those who knew Jari remember him as a bright, joyful child whose presence brought warmth and happiness to those around him. Loved ones are now leaning on one another for support as they cope with the sudden loss.

Officials also noted that Jari had been diagnosed with autism, and investigators believe he may have been drawn to familiar surroundings near the area at the time of the incident.

Law enforcement later located and arrested a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the hit-and-run. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence and circumstances surrounding the crash.

In the aftermath, the community has begun rallying around Jari’s family, offering support and condolences during an incredibly difficult time. His memory is being honored through tributes that reflect the love and joy he brought into the lives of those who knew him.
