Authorities in Huntsville have arrested a 19-year-old man following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy inside a residence early Tuesday morning.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, officers responded to the 4900 block of Lumary Drive at approximately 2:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting in progress. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 16-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home.
Emergency responders immediately initiated life-saving efforts, but despite their attempts to save him, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the department’s Major Crimes Unit determined that the victim and the suspect were cousins. Authorities identified the suspect as Santravious Shermaud Westry, 19, of Huntsville.
According to police, Westry was inside the residence with the victim when he retrieved a firearm intending to show it. Investigators believe the weapon discharged while he was handling it, striking the 16-year-old and causing the fatal injury.
Two additional individuals who were present in the home at the time of the shooting were initially detained while investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following the investigation, Westry was arrested and booked into the Madison County Jail on a charge of manslaughter. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
The tragedy has left family members and loved ones grieving the loss of a young life cut short. As the investigation continues, officials have not released the identity of the 16-year-old victim.
