Karmelo Anthony Convicted in Fatal Stabbing of Teen Athlete Austin Metcalf at Frisco Track Meet

A Texas jury has found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, bringing a high-profile case to a close nearly a year after the deadly incident occurred during a school track meet in Frisco.

The case centered on a confrontation that took place at a track and field event held at Memorial High School, where students from several schools had gathered to compete. Testimony presented during the trial indicated that tensions arose during a weather-related delay when Metcalf and other students reportedly asked Anthony to leave a team tent designated for their school.

According to prosecutors, the disagreement escalated into a brief physical confrontation. They argued that Anthony responded with excessive force when he stabbed Metcalf in the chest during the altercation. Despite immediate efforts by emergency responders to save him, Metcalf died from his injuries.

Anthony’s defense team acknowledged that he was responsible for the stabbing but maintained throughout the trial that he acted in self-defense. Attorneys argued that he felt threatened during the encounter and believed he was in danger. Prosecutors, however, contended that witness testimony and physical evidence did not support a lawful self-defense claim, describing the act as an unjustified escalation of a relatively minor dispute.

Jurors heard testimony from students who witnessed the incident, as well as law enforcement officers and forensic specialists who helped reconstruct the events leading up to the stabbing. The trial drew significant attention due to the ages of those involved and the tragic circumstances surrounding a school-sponsored athletic event.

After reviewing the evidence and hearing closing arguments, the jury determined that Anthony’s actions constituted murder and rejected the defense’s claim of self-defense. The guilty verdict marks a major development in a case that has deeply affected the Frisco community and sparked broader discussions about student safety, conflict resolution, and youth violence.

Sentencing proceedings are expected to take place at a later date, when the court will determine Anthony’s punishment under Texas law.

Meanwhile, Austin Metcalf continues to be remembered by family members, friends, classmates, and teammates as a promising young student-athlete whose life was tragically cut short. His death remains a source of profound grief for those who knew him and has left a lasting impact on the community.
