The Montello community and residents throughout Marquette County are mourning the tragic loss of Mark Steffen, 63, who died following a fatal UTV accident in the Town of Mecan on June 8, 2026. His sudden passing has left family members, friends, and neighbors grieving the loss of a man remembered for his strong community ties and lasting impact on those who knew him.
According to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 4:00 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report of a UTV crash near the intersection of Fern Drive and 22nd Lane. Multiple agencies responded to the scene to provide assistance.
Upon arrival, first responders located the crashed UTV and found Steffen as the sole occupant. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Waushara County Medical Examiner.
Preliminary findings indicate that Steffen had been traveling north on 22nd Lane when the UTV left the roadway before reaching the Fern Drive intersection. Investigators believe the vehicle continued through the intersection and entered a wooded area, where it collided with several trees before coming to rest.
